Belfast police are attacked in continuing flag row

There has been more violence on the streets of Belfast – loyalists attacked a police car throwing a petrol bomb at the vehicle while an officer was still inside.

The police man escaped unharmed but the incident is being treated as attempted murder.

The attack was one of a series of protests across the city on Monday during which stones and fireworks were hurled at police.

More than 30 officers have been hurt in over a week of violence.

Loyalists have been protesting against a decision to take down the union flag which has been raised above Belfast City Hall for decades. It will now only be flown on a few days during the year.
