Euro 2020 will have a truely continental feel to it after UEFA chiefs decided to stage their flagship tournament in several cities across Europe instead of a single host country.
Uefa’s executive committee rubber stamped the idea at a meeting at their headquarters in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Thursday.
The bidding process for the host cities wil start in March and the decisions on the host countries expected in the spring of 2014.
The English Football Association has already put forward Wembley Stadium as a possible venue for the final.
Three of the last four European Championships have been staged in two countries promting UEFA president Michel Platini to air the idea at the end of EURO2012 which was co hosted by Ukraine and Poland.
European football’s governing body said it had consulted its member national associations
and received an “extremely positive” response.
