283 dead in landslides and floods in southern Philippines
Hundreds of people are still missing, with 283 dead in the wake of typhoon Bopha. Nearly 87,000 people are taking temporary shelter in gymnasiums and school buildings. Most of the areas affected by the howling winds, floods and landslides remain isolated due to power outages, lack of communications and destroyed roads and bridges. Helicopters are ferrying troops in search and rescue operations. Officials are appealing for food, water, warm clothes and other provisions.
