Amid the flood of photos that pass through a newsroom every day, there are occasionally those that capture both the eye and the imagination. That was certainly the case for these two pictures of an abandoned puppy in Myanmar.
A Reuters photographer was in Kyaukphyu in Arakan state to cover inter-ethnic violence there and found signs of the suffering not just of Man, but of Man’s Best Friend.
Locals said the dead dog is the mother of the puppy, who refused to leave the corpse even as it decayed. The circumstances of the dog’s death are still unknown but the fate of her offspring was at least happy one. According to NBC news, the photographer first asked locals to adopt the puppy but they said they were too poor to be able to feed it. Eventually however a home was found for the orphan in a nearby monastery.
Inter-ethnic violence in the region, between Rakhine Buddhists and Rohingya Muslims has claimed at least 170 human lives since it flared in June.
