Corsican business leader gunned down in broad daylight

An increasingly deadly war between criminal gangs in Corsica appears to have claimed another victim – the 17th killing this year.

The president of the chamber of commerce was gunned down in broad daylight in the centre of Ajaccio.

59-year-old Jacques Nacer was shot by a lone masked assailant while he was preparing to close his clothing store in a pedestrian zone of the city center.

It comes just a few weeks after one of the most prominent lawyers on the French island was killed in similar circumstances. Antoine Sollacaro, 63, was attacked by two men on a motorcyle at a petrol station.

The latest atrocity comes two weeks before a high profile ministerial visit to investigate an island which is now classed as having the highest level of crime in Europe, in relation to its population.
