Four Palestinians are dead after an attack on an Israeli military vehicle and retaliation by Israel’s armed forces.
Israel’s Defence Minister Ehud Barak says the response was aggressive, after four Israeli soldiers were wounded by an anti-tank missile fired from Gaza.
The violence began with an attack on the military jeep as it patrolled the northern Gaza border.
Israel then launched ground attacks and air raids on Palestinian territory including the town of Khan Younis.
The dead Palestinians are said to be civilians. Another 25 people were injured, with many being rushed to hospitals in Gaza City.
Palestinian militants have vowed to avenge those killed and are warning Israelis living near the border
to stay close to their bomb shelters.
It is unclear which militant group attacked the Israeli military jeep, seriously injuring one of the four wounded soldiers, according to Tel Aviv.
