Spanish shoppers stay at home

Spanish retail sales suffered their worst drop on record in September, plunging by nearly eleven percent.

It was the 27th consecutive monthly decline, and has been partially blamed by a rise in VAT at the start of last month.

However the slump has been good for budget retailers, with supermarket chain Dia reporting a tripling of its nine-month profit as consumers sought out cheaper deals.
