Two crew members from the replica of the Tall Ship HMS Bounty are still missing after the vessel was abandoned off America’s east coast.

As Hurricane Sandy powered towards the eastern seaboard, a US coastguard helicopter was scrambled to rescue the 16-strong crew.

The ship started taking on water about 150 kilometres off the North Carolina coast.

It was built for the 1962 film ‘Mutiny on the Bounty’, about the famous revolt onboard a British ship in the Pacific Ocean in 1789.

14 crew members have been picked up from lifeboats. An expanded air search is underway for the two missing crew.
