Hague urges Serbia/Kosovo dialogue

William Hague, the British Foreign Minister has urged the continuation of constructive dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia.

Speaking at a press conference Hashim Thaci, the prime minister of Kosovo, he addressed Serbia directly: “The map is finished in south eastern Europe. That means that if you want to be a candidate country for the EU you have to enter into dialogue with Kosovo.”

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 following the expulsion of ethnic Albanian Kosovans from Serbia in 1999.

The long-standing bitter conflict between the two communities has left deep scars. Both sides nurse resentments and Serbia refuses to recognise Kosovo as an independent state.

In response to a meeting between the countries’ respective prime ministers earlier this week, violent protests broke out in Kosovo.
