Tropical storm Sandy has been upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane, and is expected to hit Jamaica later this evening.
Authorities in Jamaica and Cuba have issued hurricane warnings, telling residents to expect heavy rain and winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour. People have been battening down the hatches in preparation, and stocking up on bottled water and tinned food.
The storm is heading towards the south coast of Jamaica and expected to continue moving north, passing over Cuba and the Bahamas before heading out to the Atlantic.
In Cuba, where up to half a metre of rainfall is expected, people have been clearing waterways and riverbanks in order to help the expected downpour run away rather than cause flooding.
