Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki claimed her 20th career title and second of the season on Sunday after beating top seed Samantha Stosur in a thrilling Kremlin Cup final.
The third-seeded Dane got off to the ideal start and locked down the first set 6-2. But Stosur battled back in the second to send the match into a decider.
After trailing Stosur 1-3 in the third Wozniacki recovered to draw level – the trophy was then well in reach of both players. However it was the Dane who grabbed the crucial break in the 12th game of the decider to clinch her second title of the season after winning the Korea Open last month.
As Wozniacki celebrated the milestone of a 20th career victory Stosur was left still hunting her first title in 13 months. The Australian’s last triumph was the 2011 US Open title at Flushing Meadows.
