A man has been detained on suspicion of plotting to blow up the US Federal Reserve Bank.
Kadi Nafis faces charges of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and trying to provide support to al Qaeda.
Authorities say the twenty one year old was preparing to detonate what he believed was a 450kg bomb at the landmark building, although the explosives he was planning to use were in fact inactive.
New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said, “He comes here with, again the vowed purpose of committing some sort of Jihad here in the United States. He goes to the New York Stock Exchange he sees that there is significant security there and he shifts his target to the Federal Reserve Bank”.
Nafis, from Bangladesh, travelled to New York in January, where he had been living on a student visa. The FBI conducted an elaborate undercover operation and arrested Nafis in a hotel as he tried to set off the inert bomb.
