Several children were among the dead, following an air strike over the rebel-held village of Maaret al-Noomane.

An estimated 30,000 people have been killed in Syria since March 2011. Human rights groups say a further 28,000 have disappeared during the conflict, abducted by soldiers or militia.

340,000 people have fled to neighbouring countries according to the United Nations.
