The work of the American cartoonist Art Spiegelman – best known for Maus, his powerful graphic novel on the Holocaust – is being celebrated with a major retrospective in Cologne.

His 1991 book retraces his parents’ story as they survived the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Dachau.

It won the Pulitzer Prize but drew both praise and criticism for his depiction of Nazis as cats and Jews as mice.
