World number two Sergei Samoilovich of Russia claimed gold in the men’s 100 kilo category on the final day of the Abu Dhabi judo Grand Prix on Saturday. After dispatching Japan’s Kobayashi Daisuke in the semi-final Samoilovich cruised to the top of the podium when his final opponent Uzbekistan’s Ramziddin Sayidov was forced to retire after dislocating a toe.
World number nine Kirill Voprosov of Russia won the under 90 kilo class title when he beat Sherali Juraev of Uzbekistan in the final. The Russian looked comfortable in the showpiece match and threw his opponent with uchi mata for ippon and the gold medal.
After reigning supreme in Istanbul Canada’s Catherine Roberge was again on top of the podium after she won the women’s under 78 kilo division. In a rather scrappy final Roberge defeated Natalie Powell of Great Britain although she needed all her wits and experience to throw her opponent down in the bout that went almost the full five-minutes.
