Majlinda Kelmendi from Kosovo retained her Abu Dhabi grand prix title in the under 52 kilogramme category this week.
The 21-year-old was barely challenged all day and also very looked comfortable in the final as she defeated Erika Miranda of Brazil to claim the gold medal.
France’s Helene Receveaux was also in fine fettle in Abu Dhabi as she beat Austria’s Tina Zeltner by ippon to win the under 57 kilo class.
It was a top draw final in the men’s under 60 kilo division. The two highest ranked judokas – Beslan Mudranov of Russia and Amiran Papinashvili from Georgia locked horns in an explosive battle.
Mudranov prevailed though after a powerful ura nage throw to win by ippon.
Nijat Shikhalizada of Azerbaijan reigned supreme in the under 66 kilo class.
In the final he defeated Uzbekistan’s Rishod Sobirov, the double world champion in the under 60 kilo division who was making his first steps and throws in the higher weight category.
