Cuban dissident blogger Yoani Sanchez has been arrested in Bayamo, eastern Cuba. The news has been posted on social networking sites and confirmed by a local television reporter.
Sanchez’s blogs have been critical of life in Cuba under its current government. The 27-year-old has achieved international fame and many awards for her writing. She was arrested on her way to the trial of a Spanish political activist who was involved in a car crash in which a prominent Cuban dissident, Oswaldo Paya was killed along with a colleague.
It’s reported Sanchez was aiming to disrupt a trial in which Angel Carromero is accused of manslaughter and could face up to seven years in jail if found guilty. Carromero was the driver of the car.
The case which is seen to be politically charged has strained relations between Cuba and Spain.
