Two killed at Presidential election rally in Venezuela


Two men have been shot dead at a rally in the Barinas region. The Primero Justicia party, led by Presidential challenger Henrique Capiles, says the victims were local party leaders supporting their candidate.

Capiles looking to defeat Hugo Chavez in the 7 October election and is considered the most serios rival the President has faced since he came to power in 1988.

Chavez himself is also campaigning hard, opening a new monorail on Saturday and focusing on infrastructure projects, as well as singing and dancing for supporters. Despite two bouts of cancer in the last 18 months, the socialist leader says he is completely cured.

The election remains a close race and opinion polls are inconclusive.
