As President Mahmoud Abbas addressed the UN, Leila Shahid, the Palestinian Authorities’ representative to the EU spoke to euronews in Brussels.
When questioned about her nation’s push for statehood she insisted only full recognition in the UN would do.
‘‘We don’t have any alternative other than the UN. We don’t have anywhere else to go if we want to use diplomatic means instead of violence. Return to armed struggle is another question. In this regard, I think the Palestinian position is clear: if the world is not ready to take any notice of us we have other means. For instance, the cancellation of the Oslo accords. Each nation has a responsibility to its people,’‘ Shahid said.
On the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme, Shahid said Israel should give up its own atomic arsenal before dictating to others in the region.
‘‘We favour a withdrawal of all nuclear and chemical weapons in the Middle East, including Israel. We don’t accept what is being asked of Iran. Iran has signed international agreements that Israel has not signed even though Israel has some 200 nuclear missiles. Why are things demanded of Iran that are not demanded of Israel? If the United Nations wants to be respected, it must apply its policy to all countries to remove nuclear weapons from the entire Middle East.’‘
