Two US marines will face criminal charges after a video emerged showing them urinating on dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

Three others in the video pleaded guilty to non-criminal offences regarding the incident.

The footage came to light in January 2012, but was actually shot during a counter-insurgency operation in Helmand province in July 2011.

The actions of the marines were condemned by the US military and Afghanistan’s president Hamid Karzai.

Both accused men, Joseph W. Chamblin and Edward W. Deptola, are staff sergeants.

They have also been officially charged with “posing for unofficial photographs”, failing to supervise junior marines and the indiscriminate firing of a grenade launcher and enemy machine gun.
