This week the EU and China strived to find consensus on a raft of issues, mostly concerning trade. Meeting in Brussels, Beijing urged Europe to lift its arms embargo on China, but in the end it was more a case of officials agreeing to disagree, though the two partners did team up on emissions trading.

Elsewhere, France was forced to take precautionary measures after French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo published cartoons of the prophet Muhammed.

Eurosceptics MEPs came out fighting after 11 of Europe’s biggest countries, excluding Britain, called for the EU to have its own army, single foreign ministry and a seat on the UN Security Council. Finally, a controversial new French study claimed rats fed genetically modified corn produced by US food giant Monsanto had developed tumours.
