Juventus came from two goals down to draw with Chelsea in their opening Group E encounter at Stamford Bridge – ruining the London club’s start to their champions league title defence.
Chelsea’s summer signing Oscar scored twice in the first half before Arturo Vidal grabbed one back and Fabio Quagliarella hit the equaliser for the Italians with ten minutes left. Shakhtar Donetsk beat Nordsjaelland 2-0 in the other Group E game.
In Group F Bastian Schweinsteiger and Toni Kroos were on target as last season’s losing finalists Bayern Munich downed Valencia 2-1 in the Bavarian capital. Elsewhere in Group F Bate Borisov were surprise 3-1 victors over Lille in France.
Lionel Messi scored twice in the second half to help four-time champions Barcelona beat Spartak Moscow at the Camp Nou in their Group G opener. Celtic’s first game back in the competition after a three year absence ended in a goalless stalemate with Benfica.
Michael Carrick scored after just nine minutes and Nani missed a second half penalty as three times winners Manchester United battled past the Turks of Galatasaray in an unconvincing first Group H match. Brazilian Rafael Bastos scored a brace as Romanian champions CFR Cluj beat Braga in Portugal.
