Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received the US Congressional Gold Medal she was awarded in 2008 when she was under house arrest in the country – also known as Myanmar. The ceremony in Washington came as the US announced that it was relaxing some sanctions.
Aung San Suu Kyi said: “This is one of the most moving days of my life. I stand here now strong in the knowledge that I am among friends who will be with us as we continue with our task of building a nation that offers peace and prosperity and basic human rights protected by the rule of law to all who dwell within its realms.”
Aung San Suu Kyi was released from house arrest in 2010. During her visit to America she is also met President Obama at the White House.
