Rebel forces say that an attack took place in the Jobar district of the Syrian capital, leaving 20 people dead. Amateur footage uploaded to the internet shows rows of bodies, purportedly the victims of the blast.
Elsewhere, Syrian rebels have announced that they have seized control of the Tel Abayad gate on the Syria-Turkey border. Turkish government sources have confirmed that the gate has fallen. Once an ally of Syria, Turkey’s government is critical of President Bashar al-Assad and has called for him to step down.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has arrived in Syria for talks with al-Assad. The Iranian government has provided strong backing to the Syrian leadership since the uprising began in March 2011.
