Ukraine president believes election could seal EU deal

On home ground and hosting the Yalta Yes Forum the president of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovich looked forward to sealing a strategic deal with the European Union, believing the forthcoming parliamentary elections would show his country’s commitment to democracy.

The EU delegation said, “the issue of selective justice” had to be settled before relations could move to a new level.

“Our Ukrainian partners have the feeling that by the time our insistence on the values would probably be not important, that may be Ukraine is so important that Europeans would understand that to go ahead with the association agreement would be still much more important than insistence on the values,” explained Stefan Fule, EU Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy.

The EU which represents a huge market for Ukraine’s steel and chemical exports froze negotiations with Ukraine on a political association and free trade agreement. It has announced that a team of 17 observers will monitor the elections next month.
