German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told a Jewish conference on Thursday that he supports the community’s right to carry out circumcision.
“Religious freedom and religious traditions are protected in Germany and will continue to be protected. Whoever bars circumcisions of boys in Germany, bars Jewish life in Germany,” he said.
A June ruling by a court in Cologne said that circumcising young boys amounted to bodily harm, even with parental consent.
