Workers have returned to the US consulate building in Berlin after a false alarm was triggered by a suspect package.

Earlier, staff were evacuated after an employee experienced breathing difficulties when opening a hand-delivered envelope that was supposed to contain visa application documents.

Following an investigation by German and US authorities, including a probe for hazardous material, the situation was deemed safe.

It is believed the man who dropped off the envelope was an Albanian national applying for a US visa.

US embassies are on high-alert following violence in Libya, where four diplomats were killed on Tuesday night, and protests at embassies in Egypt and Yemen.
