Today’s aircraft use more fuel during take-off than at any other point of their flight.

One reason is that planes climb relatively gradually in so-called step climb intervals – small increases in altitude.

According to a study by planemaker Airbus, a passenger jet could take off in a different way in the future; propelled down the runway with an assisted take-off platform – like an aircraft carrier.

This steep ‘eco climb’ would be quicker and quieter for people living nearby – although what it feel like for the passenger is less clear!
