Ukraine court rejects Tymoshenko appeal

Former Ukrainian prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko has lost her appeal against a conviction for abuse of office at the High Court in Kiev.

The 51-year-old opposition leader, who is serving a seven-year jail term, was not present in court. Back trouble has kept her confined to hospital.

She was jailed last October over a gas deal she brokered with Russia in 2009, which the current government said damaged Ukraine’s economy.

The EU and US have called for Tymoshenko’s release, arguing that the prosecution was politically motivated by the leadership of President Viktor Yanukovich.
