Romney secures Republican nomination

The Republicans have officially selected Mitt Romney as their presidential nominee at the party’s national convention in Florida.

He will now take on Barack Obama in the presidential election in November.

But the night was more of a family affair as his wife Ann took centre stage.

This was her chance to make her husband more appealing to the broader US public, with insights into his life that voters may not be familiar with – especially those who are still wondering who to back.

“Let me say this to every American who is thinking about who should be our next president: No one will work harder. No one will care more. No one will move heaven and earth like Mitt Romney to make this country a better place to live,” said the woman Republicans are calling their ‘secret weapon’, Ann Romney.

The night also saw the convention approve the party’s manifesto that calls for tax cuts, a replacement for Obama’s healthcare law and an end to abortion. But most pundits say it is the economy which will sway the election outcome. At the moment, the two candidates are running neck and neck.
