Two dead as Mombasa Muslims riots continue

A police officer and civilian have been killed after a grenade was thrown at a police vehicle during a second day of rioting in the Kenyan port city of Mombasa.

Muslim youths have been rioting following the drive-by shooting of radical cleric Aboud Rogo Mohammed.

One person was killed and two Christian churches were torched on Monday.

Mohammed Khalifa from the Council of Imams and Preachers called for calm:

“There’s been destruction of other people’s property and churches. Bars and residential houses have also been looted or destroyed. Some innocent people have been injured and others killed, we want peace to restored in Mombasa.”

Aboud Rogo Mohammed had been accused by the UN and US of fundraising and recruiting for Somalia’s al-Shabab militants.

Rioters claim the authorities orchestrated the cleric’s death saying he was the victim of a “targeted assassination.”
