39 dead in Venezuela oil explosion

At least 39 people are now known to have died in a huge explosion at Venezuela’s biggest oil refinery on Saturday.

Dozens more were injured in the deadliest accident to hit the country’s oil industry.

It happened at the Amuay plant in Falcon state and was triggered by a gas leak.

Eighteen of those killed were National Guard troops providing security for the refinery. Fifteen were civilians, including a ten-year-old child. Six bodies remain unidentified.

President Hugo Chavez has ordered an investigation and declared three days of mourning.
