Back after the summer break, Europe weekly reviews important European news of the past week.

The German and French leaders met in Berlin to define a common position towards chronically ill Greece. The Greek prime minister outlined his positions with each separately.

Spain’s economy was at the centre of cabinet discussions on Friday in Madrid, awaiting European Central Bank decisions.

The French government softened measures reducing access to the job market for the Roma community but is pressing ahead with expulsions and the dismantling of camps.

Ukraine’s Supreme Court said it will give its ruling in the Timoshenko case soon. The former prime minister’s liberation from prison remains a condition set by the EU for Ukraine to sign an Association Agreement.

In the week ahead, on Thursday the foreign ministers will meet informally in Cyprus. On Friday the latest European unemployment data will be released. Germany will assume the monthly rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, and the Venice Film Festival will get under way.
