At Guantanamo bay they were battening down the hatches as tropical storm Isaac approached.

The atrocious weather forced the US military to delay the hearings for the five alleged plotters of the September 11 attacks.

As experts track Isaac through the Caribbean it is becoming clear its path is likely to put it off the coast of Florida by Monday – the opening day of the Republican National Convention.

Isaac has sustained winds of 75 kilometres per hour and could strengthen into a hurricane later today.

Warnings have been issued throughout the region including Puerto Rico and flood-prone Haiti.

Lurking behind Isaac in this the Atlantic hurricane season is another tropical depression, to be named Joyce if it whips up a storm.
