Four dead in Thai disco blaze

Four people have died and at least eleven have been injured after a fire at a Thai nightclub.

The Tiger Pub on the island of Phuket was extensively damaged in the blaze on Friday and was reported to be close to collapse.

Two women are among the dead but police said the bodies are too badly burnt to identify. Four French people were injured with one of them reported to be seriously ill in hospital.

The cause of the fire is being investigated with one police officer speculating that a transformer could have caught fire in during heavy rain, causing it to explode.

Thailand is one of the world’s top tourist destinations with Phuket being one of its most popular attractions. Around 19 million people a year visit the country but poor safety standards are an acknowledged problem.
