A photo of a man allegedly responsible for shooting down a Syrian air force jet is being widely distributed on the internet – an event being hailed as a victory by opponents of President Bashar al-Assad.
Video of a plane bursting into flames is also circulating, as is footage of a man rebels claim was the pilot – captured after he ejected from the craft.
Syrian state media, however, maintains technical problems were to blame for the crash which happened it says on a “regular training mission”.
Elsewhere, other film purports to show a village near Aleppo in which fighter jet missiles did strike. Although Syrian rebels have claimed several small victories against the regime, the situation in Aleppo, Syria’s biggest city, is causing growing concern for the international community with reports of civilians trapped by the fighting.
The regime claims to have retaken most of the capital Damascus, with state television broadcasting images of weapons seized during what has been described as the “biggest raid” since the start of the uprising.
