At least 87 people are now reported to have been killed when two earthquakes  struck northwestern Iran.

Four hundred people were injured.

The first tremor, of magnitude 6.4, shook an area 60 kilometres northeast of Tabriz.

The US Geological survey said a second quake of 6.3 struck nearby just 11 minutes later.

Other reports said rescue efforts are being hampered because communications lines have been brought down.

Iran straddles several geological faults and has suffered many devastating earthquakes in the past.
