One of Russia’s most celebrated directors, Pyotr Fomenko, has died at the age of 80.

Known for his inventive approach, he staged over 60 classic and contemporary productions and founded one of Moscow’s best-known theatres.

Fomenko’s death was described in a telegram of condolences sent by President Vladimir Putin as “a huge, irreplaceable loss for Russian culture and for the theatre that he created and devoted his life to serving.”
