Egypt launched air strikes against suspected Islamic militants in the Sinai peninsula on Wednesday killing more than 20, according to a state-run news agency.
It is thought the attack was in response to the killing of 16 Egyptian police officers on Sunday which was blamed partly on Palestinian militants.
Earlier on Wednesday there had been protests in the town of Al-Arish. Hundreds of people gathered in front of the governor’s office and state media reported that armed men had fired on a checkpoint.
