Iran offers "realistic" Syria summit

It has been another day of heavy fighting in the Syrian city of Aleppo, according to amateur video posted on a social media website purporting to show the Al Katraji district.

In the video, smoke billows from a tall building as flames lick the ground floor. euronews is unable to verify the authenticity of the clip but it is in line with claims from the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights of bombings and gunfire in several districts on Monday morning.

The country’s biggest city has been the scene of intense violence since rebels made a move on it at the end of July. But they appear to be struggling to hang on to territorial gains.

All signs point to the regular army preparing for a major ground assault after several days of sustained aerial bombardment.

Meanwhile Iran says it will hold a conference on Thursday for countries that have a “realistic stance” on Syria.

Tehran, seen by the West as a staunch supporter of President Bashar al-Assad, has not said which countries will be attending.
