Popular Mexican singer Chavela Vargas has died age 93 from respiratory failure.
She was open about her lesbianism in Catholic Mexico where she performed ranchera songs dressed in men’s clothes, smoking cigars and drinking on stage.
She became a close friend of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, painter Diego Rivera and writer Juan Rulfo.
Her unique style appealed to the intelligentsia in Mexico as well as other Spanish-speaking countries.
