At least 20 people are said to have been killed after Syrian security forces shelled a Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus.

Witnesses said mortars hit a busy street as residents were preparing a Ramadan meal to break their fasting. Doctors said dozens more were injured.

It was not immediately clear what prompted the shelling. Activists said rebels and government forces had been fighting nearby. Afterwards, demonstrators chanted slogans against President Assad.

Elsewhere, activists said Syrian forces killed at least 50 people in Hama. And opposition sources said Syrian bombardments killed 16 rebels from the same family in the southern Hauran Plain, a strategic region linking Damascus with Jordan.
