Brazil has begun a landmark political corruption trial, seven years after a cash-for-votes scandal rocked the government of then President Lula.

Lawyers are representing 38 former officials and associates of his ruling Workers’ Party, in a hearing that could tarnish the popular ex-leader’s legacy.

Lula himself has not been directly implicated.
