Tyhoon Saola has battered the island of Taiwan with fierce winds and torrential rain, killing at least four people.

The typhoon wreaked havoc across the Phillippines over the past few days, claiming 23 lives.

Saola triggered landslides and flooding. The typhoon’s winds reached up 155 kilometres an hour, damaging houses and roads.

Schools and businesses were closed everywhere except for Taidong county in the southeast.

Taiwan’s rail and air links were also affected.

Some 30 train services were cancelled and nearly 200 international and domestic flights were axed due to the extreme weather.
