Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan will step down as UN-Arab League mediator in the 17-month long conflict in Syria.
He will leave the post by the end of the month.
The news comes from Annan’s successor as UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon. Ban said that Annan had informed him of his intention not to renew his mandate when it expires on August 31.
Ban paid tribute to Annan, saying he deserves profound admiration. No details have emerged as to his successor.
