Lights back on in India

A senior executive at India’s national electricity supplier is reported to have said that supply has been restored in northern and eastern India after a two-day power failure affecting over half a billion people.

Much of much of the country had been reduced to candlelight at home, in offices and even in hospitals where patients faced an uneasy wait.

The power outage caused chaos on the streets of India’s cities with thousands of police called in to replace failed traffic lights.

Much of the rail network has started working again although full service will not be resumed for some time yet and of course there a huge backlog with thousands of passengers stranded at stations.

The cause of the massive power cut is still being investigated.
