An American woman who stole a baby from a New York City hospital in 1987 and raised the child as her own has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Ann Pettway was arrested last year after the victim, Carlina White, now in her mid-twenties, discovered she had been kidnapped.
In court Pettway said she was sorry for what she had done but it was not enough for the victim’s real father, Carl White:“I wasn’t able to take my daughter to school, take my daughter to day care, watch my daugther get on a bus…have birthday parties with my daughter. I don’t have any sympathy for Ann right about now. So they gave her 12 years. That’s what I have to take right now but I’m not happy with it.”
Carlina White was just 19 days-old when Pettway took her from the hospital. Although she has been reunited with her family both parents admit to difficulties in trying to get to know their now-adult daughter.
Pettway said she had taken the child because she had had two stillborn babies herself.
