Pussy Riot members go on trial in Moscow

Three members of Russian punk girl band Pussy Riot have gone on trial in Moscow.

The trio were arrested in February for protesting against President Vladimir Putin in Moscow’s main cathedral.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina and Yekaterina Samutsevich stormed onto the altar sang a song that implored the Virgin Mary to “throw Putin out”.

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church said the performance amounted to blasphemy.

The women, all in their twenties, are charged with hooliganism motivated by religious hatred or hostility.

They could face up to seven years in jail.

Their supporters include a number of prominent Western musicians, including Sting and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
