GB women's footballers start with win

Great Britain opened up their women’s football Olympic campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over New Zealand at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on Wednesday while Brazil striker Marta struck twice to hand her side an emphatic 5-0 win over Cameroon.

In group F, Japan scored twice in the first half to secure a hard fought 2-1 win over Canada in Coventry while Sweden hammered South Africa 4-1 thanks to a brace of goals from Lyon striker Lotta Schelin. This result sees Marie Hammarstrom’s team-mates go top of their group thanks to a better goal difference over the World Champions.

Elsewhere, Team USA overturned a 2 goal deficit to edge out France 4-2 while North Korea, who had initially refused to play their opening match with Colombia after a South Korean flag was shown on the big screens alongside their team lineup, eventually downed their opponents 2-0 at Hampden Park.
