Spain’s Alejandro Valverde kept his composure to claim the 17th stage of the Tour de France on Thursday, a 143.5 km ride from Bagneres-de-Luchon to Peyragudes.

British duo Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome had led a frantic chase of Valverde on the day’s fifth and last climb but the Movistar rider, who had broken away from an early escape group on the Col de Peyresourde, dug deep to hold off his rivals and secure his first stage win since 2008.

Wiggins eventually came over the finish line on the wheel of Sky teammate Chris Froome, 18 seconds behind the Spaniard.

The 32 year old, who’s bidding to become the first Briton to win cycling’s most prestigious race, faces one last test — Saturday’s individual time trial from Bonneval to Chartres.
